December 2003
Jack Snipe, Strumpshaw Fen, Norfolk
Jack#01
Bobbing up and down as if it was on a trampoline, this Jack Snipe only showed briefly among the reed
stems on the water's edge at the RSPB reserve at Strumpshaw.
Waxwings, Shottisham, Suffolk

The year ended in the same way as it had begun, with flocks of Waxwings moving around the region. This
group took up residence in the peaceful Suffolk village of Shottisham, roosting in the trees and gardens,
and swooping down to feed on the hawthorn berries in the roadside hedgerows.

The birds found a flooded ditch in the corner of a garden - a useful drinking and bathing area.

The last word of the year goes to the rare American vagrant which turned up in a suburban garden on
the outskirts of Oxford.
